Tetris Computer Game
Researchers find that regular sessions of this game can improve your planning skills, critical thinking, language and reasoning. Tetris forces players to think briskly by slotting multiple sized cascading blocks into a solid shape on the screen.
The research is one of the first, using MRI scanning technology to study the effects of computer game play on the brain. Tetris, is played by millions on many platforms from mobile phones to PCs. It is the 25th anniversary since the initial release of Tetris.
The three-month study, from the Mind Research Network, found teenage girls who played Tetris grew a thicker brain cortex, an indicator of increased grey matter. They also displayed greater brain efficiency.
Neuropsychologist Dr Rex Jung said that the most surprising findings in brain research in five years is that juggling games increased grey matter for the motor areas of the brain. The research co-author Dr Richard Haier agrees that Tetris is useful for brain researchers.
The researchers are planning to expand the study to investigate whether brain changes revert to normal when people quit playing.
